Also known as Blepharoplasty, eyelid surgery is a popular cosmetic plastic surgery that improves the appearance of the upper eyelids, lower eyelids or both and gives a rejuvenated appearance to the surrounding area of your eyes, making you look more rested and alert. As skin ages, it gradually loses its elasticity. A lack of elasticity, combined with the constant pull from gravity causes excessive skin to collect in the upper and lower eyelids. Excess skin on the lower eyelid causes wrinkles and bulges and on the upper eyelids an extra fold of skin forms which can hang over the eyelashes and obstruct vision. Bulges in the upper and lower eyelids can also be caused by the fat that cushions the eyeball. The thin membrane that holds the fat in place weakens with age, allowing the fat to protrude into the lids.
Upper Eyelids
For upper eyelid surgery, generally an incision is hidden within the natural fold of the upper eyelid and extends slightly beyond the outside corner into the laugh lines or other existing creases. Through this incision, excess skin and fatty tissue are removed. Because the incision follows the natural contour of the upper eyelid, it usually is inconspicuous.
Lower Eyelids
For lower eyelid surgery, often an incision is hidden just below the lower lashes. Through this incision, excess skin, muscle and fat are removed, or fat may be redistributed to eliminate puffiness or bulges. As in upper eyelid surgery, placement of the incision in natural crease lines allows for the scar to usually heal in an inconspicuous fashion. In some cases, the fat pocket can be removed from inside the eyelid with no external scar.
Eyelid Surgery Recovery
A certain degree of swelling and bruising is normal. Cold compresses, as well as head elevation when lying down, will enhance healing and relieve discomfort. Self-absorbing stitches will dissolve on their own.
