Aside from fat grafting, there
are a variety of less permanent injectable fillers available
today. As we age, our faces begin to show the effects of gravity,
exposure to the sun, and years of facial muscle movement,
such as smiling and squinting. The underlying tissues that
keep our skin looking youthful begin to break down, often
leaving laugh lines, smile lines or facial creases over the
areas where this muscle movement occurs.
Injectable fillers can help fill in these lines and creases,
temporarily restoring a smoother, more youthful-looking appearance.
When injected beneath the skin, these fillers plump up creased
and sunken areas of the face. They can also add fullness to
the lips and cheeks. Among the most popular are:
 Restylane
®- a cosmetic dermal filler made of hyaluronic acid, a
natural substance that already exists in the human body. It
is very effective for filling in the nasolabial folds, also
known as "marionette" lines and for plumping lips. Resylane
lasts twice as long as collagen, so treatments are typically
scheduled twice a year.
BOTOX
® - BOTOX injections effectively and temporarily relax
the facial muscles where expression lines deepen and become
more noticeable. With less movement, the skin surface gradually
smoothes out, and the moderate to severe frown lines begin
to fade. This is particularly effective on the forehead, between
the eyes and crow's feet. The process takes only a few minutes
and there is no recovery or down time.
Juvederm ® - Recently FDA approved, Juvederm is also a
cosmetic dermal filler made of hyaluronic acid. It is optimal
for mild, moderate, or severe nasolabial folds, marionette
lines, and excellent for plumping the lips. Juvederm lasts
at least as long as Restylane. Dr. Dadvand is one of the few
plastic surgeons selected to partake in the Juvederm JET trial.
Perlane ® - FDA approved on 5/2/07, this is the latest
in our armamentarium against aging. Perlane is a cosmetic
dermal filler made of hyaluronic acid, and so it does not
require allergy testing. It is very effective for moderate
to severe nasolabial folds and marionette lines.
Radiesse ® - This filler, formerly known as Radiance,
is composed of calcium hydroxyapatite, which is a natural
mineral in the body. It is indicated for deep nasolabial folds,
acne scars, marionette lines, as well as restoring volume
in and around the cheeks and jawline. Radiesse lasts 1 to
2 years.
After your treatment, you might have some redness or swelling.
This will normally last for only a few days, although everyone
is different. Sun exposure should be avoided until any redness
or swelling disappear.
