We perform cosmetic nose surgery and nasal breathing surgery, as well as correction of previously operated noses called revision rhinoplasty or secondary rhinoplasty. Dr. Ellenbogen has introduced many innovations, which give patients a natural, unoperated look.
Functional Rhinoplasty (Nose Breathing Surgery)
When considering functional Rhinoplasty, several areas of the nose should be addressed. The opening of the nose, called the external valve, the middle part of the inside of the nose, called the septum, the structures on the outside wall of the inside of the nose, called turbinates, and the internal nasal valve problems such as cancer. Each one of these areas can contribute to difficulty breathing through the nose and may need to be addressed separately or together to get the best possible results
Many patients feel that cosmetic surgeons only operate on beautifying the nose, but in fact plastic surgeons like Dr. Ellenbogen are experts in opening up the nasal airways to make breathing easier. Inflammatory problems such as nasal allergies or sinusitis can be the root of this problem; however structural problems in the nose may also be the culprit. Be it nasal blockage from enlarged hypertrophic turbinates, a deviated septum, vomer, or ethmoid, or collapsing internal valves (nose pinches inward and blocks airflow on inhalation), Dr. Ellenbogen is experienced in each of these and other corrections. Dr. Ellenbogen performs many nasal surgeries in which both cosmetic and functional breathing problems are corrected in the same operation.
Revision Rhinoplasty
Revision rhinoplasty corrections by Dr. Ellenbogen
Revision rhinoplasty (secondary rhinoplasty) involves making corrections to previous unsatisfactory cosmetic rhinoplasty. It is a specialty in itself and much more difficult than repairing a first time nose because it is working with scar as well as an emotionally injured patient.
Understanding Revision Rhinoplasty
The exact procedure followed when performing revision rhinoplasty will vary from one patient to the next as the issues that need to be corrected will vary. If dents were created in the nose, for example, the surgeon may need to use. Breathing problems developed due to the original rhinoplasty would also be addressed. The procedure mostly corrects the shape or tip of the nose.
Immediately after revision rhinoplasty surgery, a small cast will be placed on the outside of the nose. It will be removed in about one week. While some bruising and swelling may occur, this is generally milder than after primary rhinoplasty procedures. Bruising should fade within about ten days, while the swelling will fade within several months. Patients also generally experience less discomfort than after primary rhinoplasty procedures. Cold compresses can be applied to the nose to help minimize bruising and discomfort. Patients will need to avoid over exertion, risking injury and sun exposure for a period of time after surgery.
Nostrilplasty (Correcting nostril size and shape)
Some individuals are born with asymmetrical nostrils or very wide nostrils. Others have misshapen nostrils caused by a previous rhinoplasty. Dr. Ellenbogen won an award from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery in 2003 for his landmark article on reshaping nostrils. He is considered a world expert in the correction of the asymmetrical nostrils, nostrils that are too large, nostrils that are too narrow or misshapen nostrils.
