Dr. Richard Ellenbogen's Education and Training
While at the University of Florida, Richard Ellenbogen excelled in both art and pre-medical courses. He went on to graduate from the University of Miami Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine in 1968, and completed general surgery training in New York City. To satisfy an interest in plastic surgery correction of birth defects, Dr. Ellenbogen traveled to The Hague, Netherlands, where he served a fellowship at the Red Cross Hospital.
When he returned to the United States, Dr. Ellenbogen completed a fellowship in hand surgery at the prestigious Hospital for Joint Diseases in New York City, while also working as an Assistant Police Surgeon in the South Bronx. Dr. Ellenbogen completed his residency at the State University of New York (SUNY) in plastic, maxillofacial and reconstructive surgery.
After his training in New York, Dr. Ellenbogen moved to Los Angeles and became certified in plastic surgery by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. He designed his personal medical suite with state-of-the-art outpatient operating rooms and museum quality antiques, which Dr. Ellenbogen refinished himself. Since 1980, his practice has focused on cosmetic surgery; however, Dr. Ellenbogen still performs reconstructive birth defects surgery and consults on cases involving complicated reconstructive surgery.

Biography of Dr. Richard Ellenbogen
One of the most published and innovative plastic surgeons, Dr. Ellenbogen has taken his 30 years of plastic surgery experience and written numerous textbooks and scientific journal articles on facelift, eyelid surgery, forehead lift, breathing and cosmetic nasal surgery, underarm breast enlargement, and liposuction techniques, as well as research on silicone and its use in cosmetic surgery. Dr Ellenbogen's vast knowledge and pioneering of procedures has led his peers to reference him as "The Father of Fat Grafting." Many of the techniques he has helped create are used and referred to today by plastic surgeons all over the world.
A two-time recipient of the American Medical Association's Physicians Recognition Award, Dr. Ellenbogen is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, as well as a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the International College of Surgeons. In addition, he serves as a Clinical Instructor of Plastic Surgery at the University of Southern California. Dr. Ellenbogen keeps current on plastic surgery technologies and techniques by attending and lecturing at international conferences at least once annually.
